Artist Statement
My work is an exploration of those influences that continuously compel me to create. These range from major artists—Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Picasso, Warhol—to various pop influences like the cartoons of my childhood.
In general, my work is an exploration of relationships between objects, ideas and experiences. The juxtaposition of disparate ideas, mediums or cultures has always delighted me with its ability to yield new and exciting compounds. My artwork celebrates the ability of one object or symbol to simultaneously embody multiple meanings.
Consequently, my artwork is a mixture of all media—paint, pencil, sculpture and whatever else it might take to tell the story at hand. I work with materials ranging from perfectly molded plastic toys in their array of vibrant colors, to rotten wood that I’ve rescued from the side of the road. I believe that we are all a mixture of elements both good and bad from our own walks of life. My artwork attempts to elevate this truth and teach us to accept all parts of ourselves.
About Jack
I am a graduate of Winthrop University in Rock HIll, SC with a BFA in Graphic Design. I studied fine arts for two years in the School of Visual Arts before narrowing my focus in Graphic Design.
I am originally from South Carolina, but have moved a little further south in search of taller buildings and more liberally-minded people.
I live and work as a professional artist in Atlanta where I have made my home since 2000. My art studio is at The B Complex—an artists’ co-op in Atlanta’s West End community. I am also a freelance graphic designer via my business—Lab Monkey Design.
